You need a hex editor to do this though, so you'd have to find and download one online and then you open the homm2 exe file in that and get started.Īnyway, I tailored the map to specifically for a modded homm2, so it's a pretty unique game. It's useful to have a copy of the homm2 manual open as you do it so you can check values (for things like stats, gold cost, etc.) so you can verify that you're in the right spot. It's a bit confusing at first, but if you read through the thread I linked to where they discuss how it works and read my text file (which acts as a quick reference "cheat sheet") then after some playing around you can do it yourself pretty easily. I also created a folder that includes a text file that explains how to modify the homm2 file yourself to create your own mods. You can check out the text file in the same folder to see what the changes are. Anyway, I created a heroes2 mod specifically tailored for this map. This requires some explanation if you're not familiar though.Ī long while back there was a thread at the Heroes Round Table where people first discovered and began discussing how you can use a hex editor to modify the exe file for homm2 to change many aspects of the game (creature stats, spell costs, building costs, growth rates, etc.). The map was heavily altered by myself for this purpose and includes a modified version of the homm2 exe file. Lastly, there is a folder "Single Player Modified Maps." This includes an XL map that has been modified to be an epic, single player game that culminates with an insane battle against a crazy powerful AI. Pretty much all changes are limited to adding more stuff in "blank spaces" (e.g a bunch of empty ocean) and adding some extra well guarded treasure caches or stuff like that. I have also altered them from their original state, so if you've played the same map before you'll find that the versions here are slightly different. The favorites folder has maps I've playtested and really liked. I also have a few homm1 maps I made in the homm1 folder as well. No epic XL maps yet, though I have been "working on" one called Pangea for like 15 years and am about ready to admit I'll never actually finish it. For homm2 I have one small map that is pretty challenging (Lost Dreams), and a medium map that is not challenging at all but supposed to be well rounded and fun like the original homm2 map Beltway. These are the only maps I can gaurantee no one has seen before since I've never uploaded them anywhere until today. The folders titled "mine" have maps I made myself. There is no custom campaign interface for homm2 like there is for homm3 so you're just supposed to play the maps in order and read the accompanying text files. The campaign folder has some popular campaigns made by famous mapmakers like Timothy Duncan. The only one I remember specifically is one of the Broken Alliances alters was changed to make several AI players way more powerful. There are a few that actually have some substantial alterations to the map itself though. This is mostly just classics that came with the non-expansion that have been "expansionized" by adding an expansion item somewhere on the map. In the Homm2 folder, there is a folder of altered default maps. I still play it on occasion for the nostalgia :) and have some decent maps for it included. There are some Homm1 maps as well, although I doubt most people play that anymore. Here is a link to a Google Drive folder that has all the best maps. Here is a copy of my previous post about this that has a link to the shared Google Drive folder where you can download the maps if you like: I've got the decent maps saved on a Google Drive. Most of the HoMM2 maps uploaded to old map databases were obviously made with the random map editor, which for HoMM2 was awful. You're totally right that there are hardly any half-decent user-made maps for HoMM2. I have sorted them all and separated out the good ones as well as those with potential that may be rough around the edges in their current form. I posted this elsewhere in this sub around a year ago, but I have a huge collection of HoMM2 maps that I've amassed by scouring the Internet over the last 20 years.
